Much of Canney’s work from this period, executed under difficult circumstances, has been lost. The monastery is almost certainly La Certosa di Padula. This was the period when Canney’s fascination with Italy really took hold, sowing the seeds for his move to the country later. The final period of war service, in Austria, was taken up mainly with graphic design as art editor for an army magazine (see next page) and broadcasting for the local forces network.
