Mostly produced in Italy, the white reliefs can be seen as a response to the strength of the Italian sun, as well as a distillation of the ideas of relations between forms on geometric themes that preoccupied Canney. The sgraffiti add an inscriptive and textural note to otherwise clean surfaces, and carry with them a runic sense, which could be seen as a distant echo of Cornwall.
